REPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION AND DISARMAMENT LAUNCHED BY PRIME MINISTERS RUDD AND HATOYAMA
15 December 2009
The Report of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament, “Eliminating Nuclear Threats: A Practical Agenda for Global Policymakers”, was presented on 15 December in Tokyo to the Prime Ministers of Australia and Japan, their excellencies Kevin Rudd and Yukio Hatoyama, by the Commission Co-Chairs, former foreign ministers Gareth Evans and Yoriko Kawaguchi.
The report is the work of an independent Commission established by the Australian and Japanese Governments. The Commission was intended to stimulate debate and provide forward-looking options and possibilities for consideration.
At the launch in Tokyo, Prime Minister Rudd said the report represents an important framework for discussions and debate on non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.
The Australian Government welcomes the report as a valuable contribution to achieving a positive outcome at the NPT Review Conference in May 2010.
