REMARKS BY AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER
AT A RECEPTION CO-HOSTED BY
SCREEN AUSTRALIA AND THE HIGH COMMISSION
DURING THE TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL
Toronto
14 September
The High Commission is delighted to join with Screen Australia for the third time to host this networking event during the Toronto International Film Festival.
From my perspective, this event is invaluable as an opportunity to bring together some key groups, those who make movies – Australian actors, directors, producer and technicians, those Canadians and others who appreciate good movies from Australia , and those who appreciate Australia more generally.
This event is really best seen as a crossroads for individuals and organisations to make contact and to maximise their exchanges and to cooperate on projects of interest.
I am delighted that this year we have a record number of Australian films, 17, selected for screening at the Festival – that is a marked improvement on some previous year’s showings and demonstrates the success of the efforts by many – including those in this room.
I would like to congratulate all those associated with the Australian presence at the Festival. And I would like to recognise the importance of the Festival to the ability of Australian films to penetrate the North American market. The Festival is today a key event on the international film circuit and the success of the event this year augurs well for the future.
I would also like to thank everyone for attending tonight’s reception and for those involved in making it such a success.
I am pleased to introduce Ruth Harley, the CEO of Screen Australia, and to ask her to say a few words.
